Medford Community Read

March 5th, 2010
March and April are Medford Community Read months! This year’s Library-sponsored community read book is Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World by Mark Kurlansky. There are also three books for younger readers. This year’s Community Read events will deal with the history of New England fishing as well as the challenges facing marine ecology. The first program will take place on Thursday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Medford Public Library
We Are All Fishermen
A Lecture by Richard Adams Carey
George’s Bank and the inshore waters of New England were America’s first treasure chest, and Europe’s first clue to the vast natural wealth of the North American continent. There seemed to be no limit to the cod and other valuable species. The treasure replenished itself, over and over, and then it all went bust in the 1980s. Since then warring factions of fishermen, corporations, environmentalists, consumers, and politicians are still trying to figure out how to restore it. The success or failure of that effort is of huge import to us all.
Join Richard Adams Carey (Southern New Hampshire University) for the truth of why it went bust, a peek into the daily lives of real-life Cape Cod fishermen as they cope with the troubles of the industry, and a look ahead to what the future might hold.
This program is funded by the Medford Arts Council, which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Medford starts 2010 by giving! Thank you!

February 2nd, 2010
Thanks to all who contributed to and supported the suitcase collection drive for foster children conducted by Suitcases4Kids on Jan. 16 at Medford City Hall.
In just four hours, 1,039 suitcases were collected, to be donated to family service organizations so foster children moving to new homes have a dignified way to transport their belongings.
More than 40 volunteers assisted at the event, including a group of students from Medford High School.
Benvenuti’s Italian Kitchen and Papa Gino’s on Riverside Avenue, and Dunkin’ Donuts on Salem Street donated refreshments.
The organizers also wished to thank Medford Mayor Michael J. McGlynn for co-sponsoring the event and opening Medford City Hall for the collection; corporate sponsor Citizens Bank; and Cheryl White, Executive Director of the Medford Chamber of Commerce.
Suitcases4Kids has now collected 10,194 suitcases toward its goal of 14,000 by June 10, 2010. Information on future collection drives will be available on the Web at www.suitcases4kids.org.

Trail Planning Workshop at the Middlesex Fells Reservation

February 2nd, 2010
DCR SOLICITS PUBLIC INPUT ON TRAIL PLANNING PROCESS
FOR THE MIDDLESEX FELLS RESERVATION
The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has scheduled a Trail Planning Workshop to solicit public input as the agency begins to develop a Trail System Planning Process for the Middlesex Fells Reservation.
The Trail Planning Workshop will be held on Monday, February 8, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the McGlynn School Auditorium, 3002 Mystic Valley Parkway, Medford.
The trail plan will map out plans for the entire trail system at the Middlesex Fells Reservation, which covers 2,575 acres in parts of Malden, Medford, Melrose, Stoneham and Winchester. The plan will provide guidance for short and long-term management of trails, set priorities for allocating limited staff and financial resources, and identify stewardship partners and opportunities. The plan will
function as a stand-alone trails plan and a component of a future
Resource Management Plan for the entire Reservation.
DCR will do an inventory of all the roads and trails in the Fells; identify key scenic, natural and cultural resources; and make recommendations regarding trail closures, new trails, trail
restoration, trail use, education and policies.
DCR expects to complete a draft trails plan by April 2010. Comments also can be submitted via email to paul.jahnige@state.ma.us.

Medford teens use texting to help peers say no

December 10th, 2009

The youth organization Teens Against Drinking and Drugs – or TADD, an offshoot of the local nonprofit Medford Health Matters – launched the service about three months ago.

Medford Health Matters Releases Youth Health Data

December 2nd, 2009

Over 1,900 Medford students in middle and high school completed the Communities That Care Youth Survey (CTCYS) in spring of 2009. The CTCYS provides important information for the City of Medford, Medford Health Matters, and the Northeast Center for Healthy Communities to prevent substance abuse among youth in the community. The CTCYS was paid for by the Drug Free Communities Support Program awarded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.  To view a synopsis of the substance abuse data go to the Executive Summary of Substance Abuse Results (2009).  To view the reports go to Middle School or High School reports.
